Hawthorne Asylum is a lively food court nestled on Portland’s SE Madison corridor, offering a vibrant mix of global street eats and casual dining vibes. This spot works best for groups who appreciate variety and relaxed, communal seating where you can sample everything from smoky ribs and brisket to Korean bibimbap, Thai chili burgers, and a Chicago-style hot dog all under one roof.

The atmosphere tends to shift with the seasons, but it’s always geared toward comfort and socializing. On sunnier days, the outdoor picnic benches with built-in heaters invite you to linger even when the Oregon breeze picks up. Cool, covered areas with fire pits and spacious tables make it an easy spot for families, friends, and even leashed pets to settle in no matter the weather. There’s also a modest indoor dining option for when you crave shelter without sacrificing the open, market-style feel.

Hungry visitors can expect a bustling scene where food carts serve up local favorites like fish and chips, jambalaya, dumplings, and hearty smoked meats. The staff tend to be approachable and patient, especially helpful when navigating the many menu choices. You order at the carts and then wait for a pager to alert you when your food is ready—a system that keeps things moving smoothly without the typical food court chaos. The addition of a small bar onsite means you can pair your meal with something from their draft beer selection or cocktails, further enhancing the laid-back but electric evening energy.

Hawthorne Asylum fits naturally into this part of Portland as a go-to spot for casual dining that doesn’t force you to choose just one cuisine or seat. It’s suited to those who want to share meals with varied tastes, enjoy locally inspired food innovations, or just soak up a relaxed, friendly crowd. Early evenings, especially when the city lights flicker on, tend to be when the vibe comes alive, making it a popular destination for both locals winding down after work and visitors looking for a diverse food experience in one space.

Atmosphere was lovely! We chose a sunny, 47 degree, windy day. It was chilly, but the sun was warmth and this place has heated picnic benches! Plus, they do have a small indoor eating space. Good place for kids and keashed pets. We ate at Bibimbap and had the Beef and Spicy Pork Bulgogi. Both were delicious and fun to try something new! The chefs in the cart were friendly and I will need to go back and try another delicious menu option! Cheers!

If you are traveling to Portland I really recommend trying foods here specifically for dinner (night vibes were great) A very good variety of good foods with great vibes and atmosphere to go with friends or family. There is also a cool bar on-site so you can both get a drink and grab a food. A couple of different seating areas including a covered heated table for colder weather.

Food was fantastic, I could eat here every day and not get sick of it. $16 for my Texicano bowl with chicken and carnitas. The person at the counter for the Texicano food was patient as I figured out what I wanted. The recycling and compost area is super unique. 9/10

This place is awesome! One of the best experiences of our vacation. Cocktails and food carts how awesome! Watching people mingle. So many food options. The decor is cool too. If your on vacation this place offers all the different food a family could want. Lots of tables a little wait on food. But they have an amazing system. You order then get a pager and when it goes off you go pick up your food where you ordered it at. Also they separate the trash for recycling.

Very cool variety of food carts from mediterranean to louisiana. It has a cool seated area around a fire and a covered area out back. We had the philly cheese steak and waffle fries, and it was fantastic.

Our first visit to a food card pod in Portland, the Hawthorne Asylum was a really great introduction to all the great food that Portland has to offer. There's a wide variety of options, from Philly Cheese to Korean BBQ and everything in between. We chose to eat at Smaaken, a Chicken & Waffles-type place that had the best waffle sandwiches. You could come here every day on a trip to Portland and get something different, though I recommend exploring as there really are so many options. One of the best things about the Asylum is the bar, aptly named "Asylum Spirits."

Great place to grab a bite with friends. I love this place, and if it wasn't in the heart of Portland I'd definitely be here more. It's got such a wide variety of food that they're pretty much are guaranteed to have something you're craving. And the atmosphere is so nice. Granted, it might not be the best if you're not good with crowds or enclosed spaces. But if ur chill with that, it's a very nice vibe. Great place to go on colder days because of the heating. This is one of the places that makes Portland fun. You don't need something extravagant to feel at home

This food court in Portland was fantastic! There are at least a dozen foodcarts with all sorts of offerings. I tried a burrito from a Korean fusion place and it was delicious . Other offerings on hand were a good looking Philly cheese steak cart with a lot of different sandwiches, there was a falafel cart, burgers, bubble tea, a bar and plenty of seating. During the cooler months there is a large outdoor fireplace to keep warm by and in the summer months, there is plenty of covered seating. There is also some interesting artwork and murals. I would definitely recommend stopping by and getting food here.
